I know that sound problems usually stem from sound settings being wrong or driver problems, but is there an easy way to test if the laptop speaker is actually bad?

Q&A: media test failure on lenovo g550 laptop?

Question by Oh em gee: media test failure on lenovo g550 laptop?
I was on Facebook, leave the room to bother my mom and come back to media test failure, check cable. Exiting broadcom PXE ROM. I read online and others have the same error but theirs says operatingsystem not found…minedoesn’t say that. BIOS states the name of the hdd, I’ve tried hitting f8 for safe mode to recover but it just ignores it. PLEASE don’t tell me its a dead hdd…what’s wrong?

Well, unfortunately, I have to agree with Hugh on his answer to your previous question on this, as it is spot on correct. Since the BIOS does see the hard drive, then at least it is recognizable, but doesn’t mean that it’s working properly, and definitely not a bootable device.

The first thing I’d suggest is to reseat all the hard drive cable connections a couple of times and make sure they’re seated properly, then try it again (while you’re in there it wouldn’t hurt to reseat the memory modules too).

If that doesn’t work, then most likely the hard drive will need to be replaced. You should have it checked out first by a trained tech to verify it before going too far, and if there’s any documents, music or pictures that you wish to recover, they may be able to do that too if the drive isn’t too far gone.
