I would guesstimate between $ 250 to $ 450 to fix this. Replacement LCD's usually run the range of $ 80-$ 200 on places like eBay.

Then you would have to pay a shop to replace the screen. Shops that I have dealt with charge between $ 55-$ 150/hour for labor. Replacing the screen should only be about a 90 minute job, tops.

If you are careful it is not very hard to replace the screen yourself. Doing so would save you a lot of labor costs and make the replacement definitely cost-effective versus buying a new laptop.

Solid State Drives are a funny thing. They offer up some amazing numbers and increase boot time tremendously.

But they are 600+ dollars... and honestly i've never found a reliable 128gig SSD for less than 1k... i would be worried about build quality. As unless you get the new generation of professional drives your not getting any better (and in alot of cases worse) preformance than a standard HD, for a ton more money and i have seen more than one of the lesser grade drives crap out after just a few weeks of med-high grade read write

If your not getting the professional grade of them then typically its not worth the expense for the solid state drive. You can get a 320gig 7200rpm drive MUCH cheaper and get the same preformance (except boot times)

Also i'm not sure if SSD is going to be a viable technology. PMC (Programable Metallization Cell) technology should be out next year and if it works as promised then its going to instantly dominate the physical storage arena. The university of Arizona is working on it and its a HUGE storage format... talking 1 TB thumb drives and 20TB laptop hard drives. The access speed is slow, but i have a feeling that the next generation of storage capable laptops will incorporate a 32gb-64gb high capacity (professional grade) SSD for the OS for super boot times and smooth operating, and then the actual storage device will be a 20TB PMC drive

But honestly only time will tell

Easy enough to replace with basic skills.

Around a hundred bucks will get a new screen then all it takes is a little searching on the web for a tutorial on how to replace the broken unit.

There is no other way to get a discount on a new Mac, unless someone returned one for some reason, at which point it can't be sold as new and may be discounted even further. You can buy refurbished models directly from Apple: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTY0MjUwOTE, which include a full 1 year warranty.

There's no education discount on top of the discount you get for a refurbished model. You can take any Mac, under warranty or not, to the Apple Store for service and repair; the only question is what it will cost you to repair something.

The cheapest you can get from Apple is $ 699 for an older (but still with decent specs) refurbished Macbook. The education store seems to be down right now so I can't tell if there's a student discount on top of that.

I got a discount for being a student and because my father is a teacher, so if it's for school you may get a discount.
